Dead Kennedys are an American hardcore punk band formed in San Francisco, California in 1978 by vocalist Jello Biafra, guitarist East Bay Ray, bassist Klaus Flouride, and drummer Ted. Emerging from the first wave of American hardcore punk, the band became one of the most influential, controversial, and politically outspoken acts in punk history.
Known for their razor-sharp satire, confrontational social commentary, and distinctive fusion of hardcore punk, surf rock, and experimental influences, Dead Kennedys helped define the sound and attitude of American hardcore throughout the 1980s.
Dead Kennedys’ sound combines hardcore punk aggression with surf-inspired guitar work, garage rock energy, and biting lyrical wit. Their songs frequently attack political corruption, censorship, consumerism, organised religion, authoritarianism, media manipulation, and social hypocrisy.
