The first incarnation of Atomic Rooster, featuring Vincent Crane (organ/vocals), Nick Graham (vocals/bass) and Carl Palmer (drums), had been together just long enough to record their debut album in 1970. Before Graham - the only bassist Atomic Rooster ever had - joined the band at the last minute, the band had risen from the ashes of the newly disbanded Crazy World of Arthur Brown
The material was primarily by Crane and consisted of heavy as well as versatil songs. The agility is always palpable through all the impressively diverse styles from folk-inspired country songs to bluesy horn arrangements to driving rock and jazz numbers. Lyrically, Crane opens up his penchant for dark symbolism. For release, the band benefited from stellar live performances, positive word of mouth and authoritative BBC radio sessions.
