A few months after founding guitarist Scott Middleton left the band, Cancer Bats finished their first album with the new lineup. The hardcore punk kings from Toronto admit that they knew their seventh album “had to be something special” given the lineup change.
Singer Liam Cormier explains the mood in which they recorded it: “In our band, no single member has ever been entrusted with writing. Over the past 15 years that we’ve been releasing albums, it’s always been a collaboration among the four of us, who’ve developed all the musical ideas. Still, we knew that the three remaining Bats would have to prove themselves with the next album. We all felt a mix of excitement and nervousness as we began recording the 11 songs that would make up this record.” He continues: “In the final days, as we added the last ‘skateboard sounds’ and guitar snippets, we all felt our confidence grow with every playback.
The many hours and nights we’d spent writing over the past few years finally came together as a whole, as a complete work. We were proud of the band and felt that this new album was worthy of taking its place in the legacy of Cancer Bats albums.”
