'Funky Nothingness', the working title Frank Zappa used for this project, is comprised of studio cuts mostly from 1970 (see track information below) and is basically the follow up to his brilliant 'Hot Rats' release.

Frank Zappa used a very stripped-down combo featuring Don “Surgarcane” Harris on violin and vocals. The music concentrates heavily on instrumental and blues-oriented material.

This album consists of many unreleased tracks that Frank Zappa bypassed by kept his eye on during his long career- he just never got around to releasing them. All of these tracks were mixed and edited (and most were remixed) by Frank Zappa personally before his death.

Track A1: Mixed and recorded in late fall 1967 at Apostolic Studios, NYC.
Tracks A2, C2, C3: Recorded & mixed at The Record Plant, 1970
Tracks A3, C1: Recorded at The Record Plant, 3-9-70 / Re-mixed at Whitney Studios on 1-10-72
Track A4: Recorded at The Record Plant, 3-9-70 / Re-mixed at Bolic Sound on 1-26-72
Tracks B1, B2: Recorded in the Zappa Basement in Laurel Canyon in a 4-channel quadraphonic set-up, 3-1-70 / Mixed at The Record Plant circa March 1970
Track D1: Recorded at The Record Plant, 3-10-70 / Re-mixed at Winslow Ct. Studios, 2023
Track D2: Recorded at The Record Plant, 3-9-70, Overdubs, 3-11-70 / Re-mixed at Winslow Ct. Studios, 2023
