Gatecreeper are one of the most promising death metal bands of modern times. After various DIY releases and the 2016 Relapse debut 'Sonoran Depravation', the US-Americans Gatecreeper are now back with their second album 'Deserted', which emphasizes the strengths of the band around frontman Chase Mason even more clearly and results in rousing death metal songs.
These are clearly driven by the Swedish-sawing Boss HM-2 sound, but 'Deserted' is not a Stockholm clone, but combines the basic aggression of brutally rolling death metal with memorable melodies that unfold their very own magic: Gatecreeper think nothing of cheesy nursery rhyme soundtracks, but create their very own atmosphere. This quickly casts a spell over the listener, appears as nebulous as it is ominous, and lets him feel the impending doom through the music, which is always rolling brutally and the aggressive vocals (there are definitely no clear vocals here).
At the end, Gatecreeper descend into the emotional depths of doom-death, and instead of leaving the listener depressed, this sluggish ending motivates them to listen to the album again. Gatecreeper make death metal dangerous again. Dangerously intense.
