A small amount of depth returned to Genesis' music, which had given way to a focus on crunchy hits on past albums. 'We Can't Dance' had these to offer as well: 'I Can't Dance', of course, one of the most popular Genesis songs ever, plus singles 'No Son Of Mine', 'Jesus He Knows Me' and 'Tell Me Why'. Rocking riffs were paired with unusually bold and unpolished sounds, while still leaving enough room for the soft, ballad-like moments that Phil Collins had perfected over the years.
Last but not least, a special song is 'Since I Lost You', written for the late son of Eric Clapton. Most music critics agreed: 'We Can't Dance' was Genesis' strongest musical statement in over ten years, without at the same time sacrificing their hit-sense, with which they already dominated the charts on the records before.
