Right from their first album, Marillion established themselves as legitimate keepers of prog rock, taking the often underrated genre in new directions. 'Script For A Jester's Tear' was released in March 1983, immediately going platinum in their native UK, where it reached #7 on the album charts and featured two Top 40 singles, "He Knows You Know" (#35) and "Garden Party" (#16)
Rhino shines a spotlight on this favorite of neo-prog with two versions of 'Script For A Jester's Tear: Deluxe Edition'.
Originally produced by Nick Tauber, 'Script For A Jester's Tear' is the only Marillion album recorded with Fish (vocals), Steve Rothery (guitar), Pete Trewavas (bass), Mark Kelly (keyboards) and Mick Pointer (drums) in the founding lineup.
Deluxe Editions begin with a remixed stereo version of 'Script For A Jester's Tear', crafted by Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh. In addition, there are new stereo mixes of the B-side "Charting The Single," released in January 1982, and from the 'Market Square' EP that followed in October of that year
Both versions also include the first release of a previously unreleased concert recording documenting Marillion live at London's Marquee Club on December 29, 1982. Recorded a few months before the release of 'Script For A Jester's Tear', the show featured live versions of all six album tracks: "He Knows You Know," "The Web," "Garden Party," "Chelsea Monday," "Forgotten Sons" and the title track
The concert also included performances of album tracks such as "Three Boats Down From The Candy" and the 19-minute epic "Grendel" from the 'Market Square' EP. A live version of "Margaret" can also be heard, which appeared in an alternate version as the B-side of the single "Garden Party."
The Blu-ray presents a 96k/24-bit version of the new stereo mixes of 'Script For A Jester's Tear', the 'Market Square Heroes' EP and the 'Live At The Marquee' concert. Additionally, there is a 5.1 surround sound remix of 'Script For A Jester's Tear'. Rounding out the package is a brand new documentary with band interviews about the formation of Marillion in 1979 in Aylesbury to the release of 'Script For A Jester's Tear' in 1983.
4-CD / Blu-ray version of the band's debut with new mixes, the Market Square EP, an unreleased concert and a brand new documentary!
