Myrkur (Amalie Bruun) returns with her highly anticipated new album 'Spine'.
The new album is a tour de force, bringing together some of the most exciting, innovative and genre-bending moments from Myrkur's catalog into something that is as haunting, extreme and brilliant as ever. Spine shows Myrkur at their rawest and most unflinching and is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious and cinematic albums of the year.
'Spine' draws on Myrkur's personal mythology. Written during one of the most difficult times in Amalie Bruun's life - 'Spine' is the direct result of her experiences following the birth of her child. From the love and euphoria that comes with motherhood, to the fears of the unknown and the mysteries of the journey ahead, Spine is ultimately an album about the search for balance in the midst of chaos. For Bruun/Myrkur, the album explores the very human nature of what it means to be a mother, finding echoes of Scandinavian mythology along the way.
Recorded with Randall Dunn at Sundlaughin Studio in Iceland (Sigur Rós), the ups and downs on 'Spine' reflect the full range of Myrkur's emotions. These sonic shifts are represented in the music, in which MYRKUR incorporate a range of influences - from unmistakable metal as in the inimitable 'Valkyriernes Sang' to darker, folk-inspired sounds and haunting vocal passages in 'Like Humans'. The brooding 'Mothlike' shows a new side to Myrkur's sensibility, with a hint of electronic backing and lush synth orchestrations.
The title track 'Spine' proves to be one of the most moving songs of the year, as it builds through moments of affable, delicate vocal, percussion and string arrangements to a massive chorus that serves as a thesis for the rest of the album. Myrkur's euphoric outlook is on full display here as the song proclaims, "My body made your spine / You and I intertwine / You made me human / Stay with me / You will be / The one I love the most".
With 'Spine', Myrkur open the next chapter in the personal mythology of Amalie Bruun and set a new course for the enigmatic band.
