'Difficult to Cure' is the fifth Rainbow album from 1981 and marks a further commercialization of the band's sound. In an interview with the British music magazine Sounds (July 25, 1981), Blackmore openly declared his fondness for Foreigner, and former singer Ronnie James Dio referred to this phase of Rainbow as "Foreigner Junior."

Material for the album was begun while Graham Bonnet was still in the band, and they got as far as recording 'I Surrender'. Turner was recruited and sang over backing tracks that had already been completed. In an interview with the British rock magazine Kerrang! Turner explained that this was why he sang at higher pitches than he normally would (and would later).
