Genesis' tenth studio album, 'Duke', came after the band's longest hiatus between LP releases. But if they were worried two years after '...And Then There Were Three....' Worried about their audience's reaction, they needn't have. 'Duke', released on March 28, 1980, became Genesis' most successful album to date and their first U.K. No. 1. It hit the U.S. charts on April 26 and climbed to No. 11, another career high to that point

On the album Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford continued to explore the more pop-oriented side of their sound, especially on the hits "Turn It On Again" and the Collins composition "Misunderstanding". But there was still enough for their progressive fan base to cut their teeth on.

'Duke' surpassed all its predecessors by reaching the top of the UK charts in its first week of release, overtaking the Johnny Mathis album 'Tears and Laughter'. It stayed for a second week, recording eight consecutive weeks in the Top 5 and 30 in the Top 75. The band's previous best was #3, achieved by 'Selling England By The Pound', 'A Trick Of The Tail' and '...And Then There Were Three....' The album only took until July to go platinum in the UK. It also reached a new personal best in the States, going platinum there in 1988.
