When his bandmates from Deep Purple refused to cover the song 'Black Sheep of the Family' with him, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore decided to record it in a solo project. For this he hired singer Ronnie James Dio and his band Elf and went to the Musicland studios in Munich. The collaboration resulted in 1974 in the album 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow', which at the same time has clear borrowings from Deep Purple, on the other hand is characterized by the vocals of the still young Dio with his great voice.
