Rainbow was revitalised on the band's fourth and most successful studio album 'Down To Earth'. Vocalist Ronnie James Dio has been replaced by surprise choice Graham Bonnet, better known in pop than rock, and the band nailed its colours to the American arena rock mast - with the hits to back it up.
'Down To Earth' is Rainbow's best-known album because it features their two biggest hits, 'Since You Been Gone' and 'All Night Long'. For the recording, Blackmore freshened up virtually the whole band, bringing in his ex-Deep Purple band-mate Roger Glover and keyboardist Don Airey, as well as Bonnet, and retaining only Cozy Powell from the last album line-up.
The change in direction brought commercial success and a whole new fan base that elevated Rainbow to the next level.
