Alkaline Trio are an American punk rock band formed in McHenry, Illinois in 1996. Known for blending punk rock, pop punk and emo with dark lyrical themes, infectious melodies and energetic performances, the band have become one of the defining acts of the late 1990s and 2000s punk scene.
The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Matt Skiba, bassist Rob Doran and drummer Glenn Porter. After bassist Dan Andriano joined in 1997, he quickly became a key part of Alkaline Trio's songwriting alongside Skiba. Despite several lineup changes throughout the band's career, Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano have remained at the heart of Alkaline Trio's distinctive sound.
Combining fast-paced punk rock with melodic hooks and emotionally driven lyrics, Alkaline Trio developed a style that balances humour, heartbreak and darker subject matter. Drawing from punk rock, pop punk, emo and alternative rock, the band have influenced generations of musicians while maintaining a sound that is instantly recognisable.
After forming in 1996, Alkaline Trio quickly established themselves through relentless touring and a series of well-received independent releases. Their growing reputation within the American punk scene led to a deal with Vagrant Records, where albums such as From Here to Infirmary and Good Mourning introduced the band to a much wider audience.
Throughout their career, Alkaline Trio have continued to evolve without losing the songwriting and melodic sensibilities that first defined them. Their catalogue explores themes of relationships, mortality, mental health and dark humour through memorable vocal harmonies, energetic performances and sharp lyricism.
