Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band from Sheffield, formed in 2002. Led by vocalist and guitarist Alex Turner, the band also features guitarist Jamie Cook, drummer Matt Helders and bassist Nick O'Malley, who joined in 2006, replacing co-founder and original bassist Andy Nicholson after initially standing in during the band's North American tour. Together, they became one of the defining British indie rock acts of the 2000s, combining sharp observational lyrics, memorable guitar riffs and energetic performances with an increasingly ambitious musical style.
Their early music captured the excitement of Sheffield's independent music scene, with fast-paced songs about nights out, relationships and everyday life delivered with wit and detail. As their career developed, Arctic Monkeys expanded their sound beyond indie rock, incorporating alternative rock, psychedelic influences, blues, lounge and art rock while retaining the distinctive songwriting and personality that made them so successful.
Arctic Monkeys began building their following through live performances and self-recorded demos, with fans sharing their songs online and helping the band develop a strong following before they had even released a record. They were among the earliest bands to attract significant public attention through the internet during the emerging "blog rock" era, a period that helped change how new artists could be discovered, promoted and marketed. Their grassroots rise was driven largely by fans sharing demo recordings online and through word of mouth, rather than a conventional major-label marketing campaign. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), became a landmark British indie release and remains one of the defining albums of the 2000s.
Rather than simply repeating their early formula, Arctic Monkeys continually reinvented their sound. Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007) retained the urgency of their debut, while Humbug (2009) introduced darker and more psychedelic textures. Suck It and See (2011) broadened their melodic approach, before AM (2013) combined rock, blues and hip hop influences to produce one of their most commercially successful and widely recognised albums.
The band's later work moved further towards atmospheric and art-rock territory, with Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018) built around piano, synthesizers and a retro-futuristic concept, followed by The Car (2022), which continued the band's cinematic and sophisticated direction. Across their career, Arctic Monkeys have remained one of Britain's most influential contemporary rock bands, balancing constant musical evolution with Alex Turner's distinctive songwriting and the chemistry of the group.
