Formed in the mid-1970s and originally active until 1985, Talas were a key part of the early ’80s hard rock scene. While they never reached arena-headlining status, their energetic performances, tight musicianship, and memorable hooks earned them a devoted following.
The band’s original lineup consisted of Billy Sheehan on bass and vocals, Dave Constantino on guitar and vocals, and Paul Varga on drums and vocals. A later, well-known lineup in the mid-1980s featured Phil Naro on vocals, Mitch Perry on guitar, Billy Sheehan on bass, and Mark Miller on drums.
Talas’ sound combined classic hard rock grit with technical proficiency, driven by Sheehan’s virtuosic bass work and Perry’s precise guitar riffs in the mid-80s lineup. Phil Naro’s powerful vocals and Mark Miller’s dynamic drumming gave the band its signature energy, while the original lineup laid the groundwork for Talas’ raw, high-energy performances.
Now re-formed, with new recruit Kire Najdovski on guitar, the band has recorded a new album titled 1985, set to be released via Metal Blade. This release brings Talas’ classic hard rock energy into the present day, blending their signature sound with modern production.
