Ascension of The Watchers are an American rock project founded by Burton C. Bell, best known as the vocalist and creative force behind Fear Factory. Formed officially in 2002 alongside keyboardist and producer John Bechdel, the project explores a much more atmospheric and introspective side of Bell's songwriting, combining gothic rock, ambient textures, alternative rock and electronic elements.
Rather than the mechanised heaviness associated with Fear Factory, Ascension of The Watchers is built around haunting melodies, spacious arrangements, textured guitars and Bell's distinctive vocals. Their music draws on themes of spirituality, mythology, personal experience and reflection, creating a darker but often deeply melodic sound.
Ascension of The Watchers began when Bell spent time in rural Pennsylvania with John Bechdel, where the pair developed the ideas that would eventually become the Iconoclast EP. Bell's interest in spirituality and The Book of Enoch helped inspire the project's name and its recurring themes, while the music gave him an opportunity to explore ideas that sat well outside the industrial metal framework of his main band.
The project expanded with Numinosum in 2008, introducing a more developed combination of gothic atmosphere, electronic programming, melodic songwriting and experimental textures. The album also led to live appearances, including support for Killing Joke during their reunion tour honouring the memory of bassist Paul Raven.
After years of writing and recording, Ascension of The Watchers returned with Apocrypha in 2020. Welsh musician and producer Jayce Lewis became an important collaborator during its creation, helping Bell realise the album's expansive sound at Northstone Studios in South Wales. The record drew on a decade of personal experiences and songwriting, while its atmospheric production marked a significant development in the project's sound. Translations: Apocrypha Remixed followed in 2021, reworking the album through electronic and club-oriented interpretations.
