Minor Threat were an American hardcore punk band from Washington, D.C., formed in 1980. Despite an active career lasting only a few years, they became one of the most influential bands in punk history, helping define the sound, ethics, and identity of the hardcore movement while inspiring generations of musicians around the world.
Fronted by Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Teen Idles) alongside guitarist Lyle Preslar, bassist Brian Baker (Bad Religion, Dag Nasty), and drummer Jeff Nelson (Teen Idles), Minor Threat combined blistering speed, concise songwriting, and fiercely independent ideals. As one of the defining bands on Dischord Records—the iconic DIY punk label founded by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson—their music became inseparable from the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene and helped establish a blueprint for independent music that continues to influence artists today.
Minor Threat's sound was characterised by explosive tempos, razor-sharp riffs, shouted vocals, and direct, uncompromising songwriting. While rooted in hardcore punk, the band also became synonymous with the straight edge movement after the release of their song "Straight Edge", although they never intended to create a formal movement.
The band's influence extends far beyond their recorded output, shaping the development of hardcore, punk, alternative rock, and independent music through their commitment to artistic integrity and self-sufficiency.
