Formed in Germany in 2004, following an earlier incarnation as The Ninth Gate, Neaera quickly became one of Europe’s most uncompromising extreme metal bands. Their sound blends the brutality of death metal with the structure and precision of metalcore, resulting in music that is punishing, emotional, and relentlessly intense.
In April 2004, the band adopted the name Neaera as they signed to Metal Blade Records, marking a defining moment in their career. Over the years that followed, Neaera released six full-length studio albums through the label, earning critical acclaim and securing positions in the German album charts. Their releases stood out for their raw aggression, sharp songwriting, and refusal to soften their sound.
Over the years, Neaera have maintained a focused lineup that defines their aggressive identity. Tobias Buck and Stefan Keller handle guitars, delivering crushing riffs and technical precision, forming the dense, driving backbone of the band’s music. Sebastian Heldt anchors the rhythm section on drums, powering the band with relentless speed and intensity, while Benjamin Donath provides bass, adding weight and groove beneath the chaos.
Former vocalist Benjamin Hilleke was central to Neaera’s earlier sound, delivering the powerful and emotionally charged vocal style that helped define the band’s identity during their formative years.
Together, this lineup embodies Neaera’s uncompromising approach both in the studio and on stage.
Neaera built a formidable reputation through extensive touring across Europe and appearances at major metal festivals, earning recognition for their ferocious and physically demanding live shows. In September 2015, the band announced they would be disbanding after a farewell tour in December 2015, bringing an emotional close to a defining chapter.
After several years of silence, Neaera reunited for select live shows in 2018 and have remained active since, much to the excitement of fans who continue to champion their catalogue.
