At the Movies are a Swedish all-star rock project formed during the 2020 lockdown by musicians connected to bands including Pretty Maids, HammerFall, Soilwork, King Diamond, Kamelot and Therion. Led by guitarist and producer Chris Laney, the project takes well-known songs associated with classic films of the 1980s and 1990s and transforms them into energetic rock and metal arrangements.
Combining melodic rock, hard rock and metal with instantly recognisable movie themes, At the Movies bring a fresh approach to songs that have become part of popular culture. Their performances balance faithful melodies with heavier guitars, powerful vocals and polished production, creating a nostalgic but energetic take on some of the most memorable soundtrack songs of their era.
At the Movies began when Chris Laney started experimenting with a rock version of “No Easy Way Out” from Rocky IV during the COVID-19 lockdown. After sharing the idea with drummer Allan Sørensen, Laney contacted several musician friends, including Björn “Speed” Strid, Linnéa Vikström Egg, Morten Sandager, Pontus Egberg and Pontus Norgren. The project quickly developed into an international Scandinavian all-star lineup, with additional guest appearances from musicians including Ronnie Atkins, Bruce Kulick and Jacob Hansen.
The first volume of The Soundtrack of Your Life appeared in 2020, focusing on songs associated with 1980s films. Tracks such as “Maniac”, “The Power of Love”, “The Heat Is On” and “The NeverEnding Story” were transformed into polished rock performances, while the project attracted attention through a series of videos released during lockdown. The album was later reissued by Atomic Fire Records in 2022 with “Last Christmas” included as a bonus track.
The Soundtrack of Your Life – Vol. 2 followed in 2022, turning the focus towards memorable songs from the 1990s. Featuring tracks including “Waiting for a Star to Fall”, “King of Wishful Thinking”, “(I Just) Died in Your Arms”, “Heaven Is a Place on Earth”, “Crush” and “I Want It That Way”, the project continued its combination of nostalgia, humour and musicianship. Together, the two volumes showcase At the Movies' ability to reinterpret familiar pop and soundtrack material through a melodic rock and metal lens.
