Static-X are an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1994 by Wayne Static and original drummer Ken Jay. Blending Industrial metal rigidity with Nu metal, Groove and electronic textures, the band became one of the defining heavy acts of the late 1990s.
Industrial metal with a relentless pulse.
For much of the band’s classic era, Static-X revolved around founder, frontman, vocalist and guitarist Wayne Static, whose unmistakable voice and stage presence defined the project until his death in 2014. Alongside Wayne Static and Ken Jay, early key members included guitarist Koichi Fukuda and bassist Tony Campos, both of whom played significant roles in shaping the band’s mechanical, riff-driven sound during its breakthrough years.
Following the band’s hiatus and subsequent return, Tony Campos remained a central figure, with Koichi Fukuda also returning to the fold. The modern touring and recording line-up has featured drummer Ken Jay (who rejoined for the reunion era) and vocalist Xer0, a masked frontman paying tribute to Wayne Static’s legacy while allowing the band to continue performing and recording new material.
Static-X first broke through with Wisconsin Death Trip (1999), a record that fused heavy industrial metal with nu metal energy and helped define the late ’90s scene. The album’s tight, percussive riffs and electronic undercurrent gave rise to Wayne Static’s own description of the sound as “evil disco” — mechanical, driving and built for impact.
Subsequent releases such as Machine (2001), Shadow Zone (2003), Start a War (2005), Cannibal (2007) and Cult of Static (2009) expanded and refined their approach. In the reunion era, Project: Regeneration Vol. 1 (2020) and Project: Regeneration Vol. 2 (2024) combined archival Wayne Static vocal recordings with new performances, bridging past and present.
Whether discovered during the peak of nu metal or through their later resurgence, Static-X remain a distinctive force within industrial-tinged heavy metal.
