Entombed are a Swedish death metal band from Stockholm, formed in 1987. One of the most influential bands in extreme metal history, Entombed are widely credited with helping define the distinctive “Swedish death metal” sound, particularly through their iconic guitar tone and genre-shaping early albums.
Emerging from the late 1980s Scandinavian underground, Entombed evolved from raw death metal roots into pioneers of the HM-2-driven “buzzsaw” guitar sound that became synonymous with the Stockholm scene.
Entombed’s early sound is defined by heavily distorted HM-2 guitar tones, aggressive riffing, and a raw yet memorable approach to songwriting. Their influence helped establish the template for Swedish death metal, alongside fellow Stockholm bands, Dismember, Grave, and Unleashed.
Over time, the band expanded their style, incorporating rock and groove influences while maintaining their heavy, unmistakable sonic identity.
Left Hand Path (1990) – landmark debut album that defined the Swedish death metal sound and introduced the iconic HM-2 guitar tone.
Clandestine (1991) – darker and more complex follow-up featuring orchestral arrangements and refined songwriting.
Wolverine Blues (1993) – groundbreaking release that introduced a death ’n’ roll style blending death metal with rock and groove influences.
DCLXVI: To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth! (1997) – more rock-influenced album continuing their evolution toward groove-driven heaviness.
Uprising (2000) – return to heavier death metal roots with modern production.
Morning Star (2001) – aggressive and refined album combining classic Entombed heaviness with updated sound.
Serpent Saints: The Ten Amendments (2007) – later-era release featuring a darker, heavier tone and modern production.
Entombed are considered one of the founding pillars of Swedish death metal and a key influence on countless extreme metal bands worldwide. Their evolution from pure death metal to groove-infused styles helped broaden the genre’s possibilities.
