De La Soul are an American hip hop group from Amityville, Long Island, New York, formed in 1988. Known for their inventive sampling, quirky lyrics, and positive outlook, they became one of the most innovative and influential acts in hip hop history.
Emerging in 1989 with their groundbreaking debut album 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul—made up of Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer), Trugoy the Dove (David Jolicoeur), and Maseo (Vincent Mason)—brought a fresh, alternative style to hip hop. Their playful creativity, unique sampling techniques, and socially conscious lyrics stood in stark contrast to the harder-edged gangsta rap of the late ’80s.
Their debut is widely regarded as a landmark in hip hop, earning a place in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Over the years, De La Soul continued to innovate with albums like De La Soul Is Dead (1991), Stakes Is High (1996), and The Grind Date (2004), cementing their legacy as pioneers of alternative hip hop.
