Atomic Rooster were an English rock band formed in London in 1969 by keyboardist Vincent Crane and drummer Carl Palmer, following their departure from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Originally completed by bassist and vocalist Nick Graham, the trio developed a powerful sound centred around Hammond organ, heavy guitar, dynamic drumming and Crane's distinctive keyboard work.
Although rooted in the progressive rock of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Atomic Rooster developed a darker and heavier approach that incorporated hard rock, blues and proto-metal influences. Their music could shift from atmospheric keyboard passages to powerful riffs and dramatic arrangements, establishing the band as one of Britain's distinctive heavy rock acts of the era.
Atomic Rooster began recording their debut at the end of 1969, with Atomic Roooster released in 1970. Shortly afterwards, Nick Graham left and John Du Cann joined on guitar and vocals, while Crane adapted his keyboard setup to provide the band's bass frequencies. Palmer subsequently departed to form Emerson, Lake & Palmer, with Paul Hammond taking over on drums. This lineup recorded Death Walks Behind You, one of the band's defining releases, while the single “Devil's Answer” later became a major UK hit. Their next album, In Hearing of Atomic Rooster, continued the band's progression with a heavier and more expansive sound.
Further lineup changes followed, with Pete French and later Chris Farlowe taking on vocal duties as Crane continued to reshape the band. Made in England (1972) and Nice 'n' Greasy (1973) demonstrated their willingness to move between progressive arrangements, hard rock, blues and more soulful influences. Crane revived Atomic Rooster in 1980, recording further material including Atomic Rooster and Headline News, before the band was disbanded in 1984. Crane died in 1989, ending the possibility of another reunion during his lifetime.
In 2016, Atomic Rooster reformed with permission from Crane's widow, with Pete French and Steve Bolton, both members of earlier 1970s incarnations, joined by keyboardist Christian Madden, bassist Shug Millidge and drummer Bo Walsh. Madden was replaced by Adrian Gautrey in 2017, while Paul Everett took over on drums in 2020. French eventually left the band in 2023, with Gautrey taking over lead vocals alongside keyboards. The current lineup features Steve Bolton on guitar and vocals, Adrian Gautrey on keyboards and vocals, Shug Millidge on bass and Paul Everett on drums. In 2025, this lineup released Circle the Sun, Atomic Rooster's first studio album in more than four decades, bringing the band's legacy into a new era.
