A Perfect Circle are an American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1999 by guitarist Billy Howerdel and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. A Perfect Circle began when Billy Howerdel, who had worked as a guitar technician for bands including Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Tool, began developing his own material and introduced it to Maynard James Keenan, who agreed to provide vocals. The pair assembled a full lineup with guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, bassist Paz Lenchantin, and drummer Josh Freese, releasing their debut album, Mer de Noms, in 2000. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number four, with songs including "Judith", "3 Libras", and "The Hollow" helping establish the band's atmospheric and melodic approach.
A Perfect Circle followed with Thirteenth Step (2003), exploring themes including addiction and recovery, before releasing the politically themed eMOTIVe (2004). After a period of inactivity, the band returned to performing in the 2010s and released Eat the Elephant in 2018, their first full-length album in fourteen years. The record introduced a more spacious, electronic, and piano-led approach, while the band continued to experience lineup changes with Howerdel and Keenan remaining its central creative figures.
These releases showcase the band's evolution from the layered alternative rock of Mer de Noms through the darker themes of Thirteenth Step, the politically focused eMOTIVe, and the more spacious and experimental sound of Eat the Elephant.
