The Rods are an American heavy metal band formed in 1979 in Cortland, New York, by David “Rock” Feinstein on guitar and vocals, Steven Starmer on bass and vocals, and Carl Canedy on drums and vocals. From the outset, the band were rooted firmly in traditional heavy metal, favouring power, melody, and straightforward songwriting over trends or excess.
Feinstein entered the metal world with strong pedigree, having previously played alongside his cousin Ronnie James Dio in the rock band Elf, a connection that helped shape The Rods’ commitment to classic metal values.
The Rods released their debut album Rock Hard in 1980, which was later retitled simply The Rods in 1981. This was quickly followed by the Full Throttle EP, establishing the band as a hard-working and prolific presence during the early years of the US heavy metal movement.
Support from the rock and metal press — particularly the UK’s Kerrang! magazine — helped fuel the band’s growing reputation. That momentum carried into the release of Wild Dogs (1982), an album that became closely associated with their rise in popularity.
By the early 1980s, The Rods’ direct, no-nonsense heavy metal sound made them a natural fit as a live band. Their growing profile saw them selected as the opening act for Iron Maiden on the Beast on the Road UK tour, placing them directly in front of one of the most dedicated metal audiences of the era.
Touring alongside major acts further cemented The Rods’ reputation as a reliable, hard-hitting band built for the stage.
