Avantasia is a German power metal supergroup with influences of opera and hard rock, founded by Edguy vocalist and songwriter Tobias Sammet in 1999. Originally conceived as a one-off studio project, Avantasia grew into an ambitious collaboration featuring musicians and guest vocalists from across the international rock and metal world. Combining powerful guitars, melodic vocals, orchestral arrangements and theatrical storytelling, the project has become one of Germany's most successful musical exports.
A defining feature of Avantasia is the collaboration between Sammet and a constantly evolving cast of acclaimed musicians and singers. The music brings together soaring vocals, orchestral arrangements, choirs, powerful guitars and elaborate storytelling, creating large-scale compositions that range from melodic rock anthems to expansive metal epics.
The project took shape with The Metal Opera (2001), followed by The Metal Opera Part II (2002). Originally intended as a one-off studio project, the success of the two albums encouraged Sammet to revive Avantasia several years later with a much larger musical vision.
When Avantasia returned, Sammet expanded the project into a more ambitious production, bringing together an ever-changing cast of established musicians and vocalists from across the rock and metal world. This collaborative approach became central to the project's appeal, allowing each release to introduce new voices and musical influences while retaining the theatrical character established by the original concept. The growing scale of the productions also translated into increasingly elaborate live shows, with Avantasia becoming a major presence at European festivals and international tours.
Over the following years, Avantasia continued to develop from a studio concept into a fully established touring act, balancing melodic power metal with hard rock, orchestral arrangements and theatrical performance. The project's later work has continued to expand its musical scope while Tobias Sammet's role as its principal songwriter and creative force has remained at the centre of the Avantasia story.
