Exhorder are an American groove/thrash metal band formed in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1985. Their sound balances sharp, aggressive riffing with slower, weight-driven grooves, creating a style that sits between classic thrash intensity and the more deliberate groove approach that followed in the 1990s.
Though often slightly under the radar compared to some of their peers, Exhorder’s influence on groove-oriented metal has proven lasting.
Emerging from the Louisiana metal scene, Exhorder built their reputation on direct, uncompromising songwriting and a raw, high-energy live presence. While early material was firmly rooted in thrash metal, there was already a clear emphasis on groove, rhythm and pacing that set them apart from many of their contemporaries.
Their sound is defined by tight, percussive riffing and a strong rhythmic focus, often prioritising weight and feel over pure speed. This gives the music a heavier, more grounded character, with songs frequently locking into slow-burning or mid-paced grooves rather than relying on constant velocity.

The result is a direct, unpolished style that reflects their underground roots while remaining consistent through their evolution from early thrash into a more groove-led approach.
Their debut Slaughter in the Vatican (1990) showcased their aggressive thrash foundation, while The Law (1992) marked a clearer move towards groove-oriented songwriting. After a long hiatus, Mourn the Southern Skies (2019) reintroduced the band with a modern production style while retaining their core identity.
