Asia – Progressive Rock, Supergroup Legacy and Timeless Anthems

Asia are an English rock supergroup formed in London in 1981, bringing together musicians from some of the most influential bands in progressive rock. The original lineup featured vocalist and bassist John Wetton of King Crimson and U.K., guitarist Steve Howe of Yes, keyboardist Geoff Downes of Yes and The Buggles, and drummer Carl Palmer of Atomic Rooster and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Combining progressive rock musicianship with melodic songwriting, polished production and accessible rock hooks, Asia quickly attracted both dedicated rock fans and a mainstream audience. Their music balances intricate arrangements and powerful instrumental performances with memorable choruses, helping establish the band as a major name in early 1980s rock.

From Supergroup Beginnings to Enduring Rock Legacy

Asia emerged as Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer entered periods of uncertainty, while Wetton had already established himself through his work with King Crimson and U.K. The combination of four highly experienced musicians created enormous expectations, but the band's self-titled debut, Asia, exceeded them. Released in 1982, the album topped charts internationally and produced the enduring hit “Heat of the Moment”, alongside songs including “Only Time Will Tell” and “Sole Survivor”. Their second album, Alpha (1983), continued that success with “Don't Cry” and “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”.

Following lineup changes and the departure of several original members, Asia continued under different formations throughout the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. The original four reunited in 2006, returning with Phoenix in 2008 and subsequently releasing Omega and XXX, before Howe departed again in 2013. Wetton died in 2017, bringing an end to the possibility of another reunion of the original lineup.

Geoff Downes has remained Asia's longest-serving member and continues to lead the band through further changes, with guitarist John Mitchell, vocalist and bassist Harry Whitley and drummer Virgil Donati forming the current lineup. In 2026, Asia entered a new era with Indigo, their first studio album in twelve years, due for release on 6 November through Frontiers Music. The album draws on material originally developed by Downes and Wetton, while bringing together the current lineup for a new chapter in the band's history.
