Atomkraft – Newcastle Speed Metal and NWOBHM Firepower

Atomkraft are an English heavy metal band from Newcastle upon Tyne, formed in 1978 by vocalist and bassist Tony “Demolition” Dolan. Originally beginning as the punk rock band Moral Fibre, they gradually moved towards a faster and more aggressive style, becoming part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement that emerged from the UK during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Combining heavy metal, speed metal and early thrash influences, Atomkraft built their sound around fast riffs, pounding drums and an uncompromising approach to songwriting. Their music also reflected the influence of bands such as Motörhead and Venom, while their connection to Newcastle's thriving metal community helped establish them among the more aggressive acts associated with the NWOBHM era.

From Moral Fibre to Atomkraft

Atomkraft’s roots date to mid-1978, when Tony “Demolition” Dolan and Paul Spillett came together with the intention of forming a band. Initially known as Moral Fibre, they played punk rock and recruited guitarists Ian Legg and Chris Taylor. Legg later left and was replaced by Sean Drew, who also subsequently departed, leaving the band operating as a trio. After returning from a trip to Bremen, Germany, Taylor brought back badges featuring the slogan “Atomkraft, Nein Danke!” The band liked the sound of the word “Atomkraft” and adopted it as their new name as they began moving towards the new "metal" sound they pursued.

The change in direction led to further lineup changes, with Steve White joining on guitar and Mark Irvine briefly coming aboard on bass before leaving and allowing Dolan to return to bass. Atomkraft began building a reputation through live performances before recording their first proper demo, Demon, at Impulse Studios in 1981. A second demo, Total Metal, followed in 1983, helping attract attention from the growing British metal press and connecting the band with Newcastle's influential Neat Records.

After further changes and a period in Canada, Atomkraft returned to England with a new lineup and recorded the Pour the Metal In demo. The release attracted the attention of Neat Records, leading to their debut album, Future Warriors, in 1985. The band followed it with the Queen of Death EP and Conductors of Noize, developing a faster and more aggressive style that placed them firmly within the emerging speed metal side of the NWOBHM movement. Their live reputation also saw them share bills with acts including Slayer, Venom, Nuclear Assault and Agent Steel.
