Amaranthe are a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Gothenburg in 2008. The band developed a distinctive sound combining melodic metal, power metal, metalcore and electronic elements, with powerful riffs, soaring melodies, polished production and multiple vocal styles.
The band's music is characterised by the contrast between clean male and female vocals, harsh vocals, electronic textures and energetic metal instrumentation. This combination has helped Amaranthe stand apart within the modern European metal scene, appealing to fans of both melodic and heavier styles.
The band was originally called Avalanche until May 2009, when they were forced to change their name due to legal issues. The members chose the name Amaranthe and continued developing their blend of melodic metal and electronic influences. They later released their first demo, Leave Everything Behind, which helped introduce their developing sound to a wider audience.
Amaranthe were formed by guitarist Olof Mörck of Dragonland and Nightrage and vocalist Joacim "Jake E" Lundberg of Dreamland and Dream Evil in 2008. The project began taking shape when vocalist Elize Ryd, who had toured with Kamelot, and vocalist Andreas Solveström of Cipher System and Within Y joined the band, along with drummer Morten Løwe Sørensen of The Cleansing, Koldborn and Mercenary. Bassist Johan Andreassen of Engel joined after the photoshoot for the Leave Everything Behind demo but before the recording of the band's debut album, Amaranthe.
This lineup established the foundation for Amaranthe's distinctive three-vocal approach, combining clean male and female vocals with harsh vocals alongside melodic guitar work, electronic elements and energetic metal instrumentation.
Their self-titled debut album, Amaranthe (2011), introduced the band's distinctive blend of melodic metal, power metal and electronic influences, establishing the foundation for their modern, highly polished sound.
The band have continued to evolve through lineup changes and ongoing releases, while maintaining a consistent identity built around melody, heaviness and electronic elements, with guitarist Olof Mörck and vocalist Elize Ryd remaining central to their sound.
