Static Abyss is the new mouthpiece for a rotten age, formed as a duo by Greg Wilkinson (guitars and bass) and Chris Reifert (drums and vocals). Both are members of legendary American masters of sickness Autopsy, with Wilkinson – also of cult act Deathgrave – recently stepping in as bass player for Autopsy’s ongoing studio work and future releases.
What emerges under the Static Abyss banner is something rawer still: a festering blend of death metal and crust punk filth, delivered with the kind of unapologetic ugliness that feels entirely deliberate. There is no polish here, no attempt to smooth the edges. Just riffs that lurch and grind, rhythms that batter rather than bounce, and vocals that sound as if they’ve clawed their way out of something unpleasant.

While the pedigree is obvious, Static Abyss is no mere side project. Wilkinson’s guitar and bass work locks into Reifert’s primitive, driving drums with a chemistry that only decades in extreme metal can produce. The result is direct, abrasive and purposefully unrefined — a reminder that death metal doesn’t need gloss to be effective. In fact, it often works better without it.
Fans of Autopsy will recognise the morbid atmosphere and fetid groove, but Static Abyss leans harder into crust and d-beat influences, giving the material a harsher, street-level edge. It’s death metal dragged through the gutter and left there to fester.
