Windir were a Norwegian black metal band formed in Sogndal in 1994 by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Valfar. The band became one of the most respected and distinctive bands in atmospheric and folk-influenced black metal, blending aggressive Norwegian black metal with melodic folk music inspired by the history and landscapes of Sogn og Fjordane.
Despite a relatively short career ending after Valfar’s tragic death in 2004, Windir left a lasting legacy through their unique combination of black metal intensity, traditional Nordic melodies, and epic songwriting.
Windir’s sound combines harsh black metal riffing, melodic lead guitar work, folk-inspired keyboard arrangements, and dynamic atmospheric composition. Their music frequently explores regional Norwegian history, nature, folklore, and themes of cultural identity.
The band became especially recognised for merging raw Scandinavian black metal with triumphant folk melodies and emotionally powerful songwriting.
