Emerging from the Australian metal underground in the mid-1980s, Mortal Sin formed in 1985 and quickly gained international recognition for their aggressive thrash metal sound. Their self-released debut LP, Mayhemic Destruction, caught the attention of major label Vertigo Records and was re-issued globally in 1987, establishing the band as one of Australia’s leading metal exports.
Mortal Sin followed up their debut with Face of Despair, produced by Randy Burns (Megadeth, Possessed, Death, Nuclear Assault), which received global acclaim. The band toured extensively, including supporting Metallica on their …And Justice for All tour in Australia, touring Europe with Testament, and supporting Faith No More on their The Real Thing tour. Singles such as I Am Immortal and the live video release Face of Mayhem helped expand their international fanbase.
After vocalist Mat Maurer departed in 1990, Mortal Sin continued to record and release their third album, Every Dog Has Its Day, in 1991. While activity became sporadic over the years, the band has remained an enduring part of the thrash metal scene, influencing generations of Australian and international metal acts.
