The Backstreet Boys are an American pop vocal group formed in Orlando, Florida, in 1993. The five members are Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson. Known for their polished vocal harmonies, memorable choruses and a sound blending contemporary pop with R&B and dance influences, they became one of the most successful boy bands of the 1990s.
Songs such as "I Want It That Way", "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)", "As Long as You Love Me", "Larger Than Life", and "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" helped define an era of mainstream pop. Their combination of romantic ballads, upbeat dance-pop and carefully arranged vocals attracted a worldwide fanbase, with their music continuing to connect with longtime listeners and new generations.
The group came together through auditions and musical connections in Orlando, initially performing at local venues, shopping centres and theme parks as they worked to establish themselves. After signing with Jive Records, they released their first single, "We've Got It Goin' On", in 1995. Their early success came largely in Europe, where their debut album and follow-up releases attracted a growing audience before they achieved a similar breakthrough in the United States. By 1997, songs such as "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" and "As Long as You Love Me" had helped turn them into international pop stars.
Their popularity reached a new level with Millennium in 1999, which became one of the defining pop albums of its era. Its success was followed by Black & Blue in 2000, as the group continued to combine romantic ballads with energetic pop production and elaborate performances. After years of intense touring and recording, they began exploring a more mature sound on Never Gone (2005), incorporating stronger rock influences alongside their familiar vocal arrangements. Kevin Richardson left the group in 2006 to pursue other interests, while the remaining four members continued recording and performing.
Richardson returned in 2012, restoring the original five-member lineup. The group marked their continued development with In a World Like This (2013) and later achieved renewed chart success with DNA (2019), demonstrating that their harmonies and melodic pop style remained relevant decades after their debut. They also explored a festive side of their music with A Very Backstreet Christmas (2022). In 2025, they celebrated the legacy of Millennium with the release of Millennium 2.0, alongside a new chapter of live performances that introduced their classic catalogue to another generation of fans.
