Talk Talk were an English band formed in 1981, led by Mark Hollis on vocals, guitar, and piano, Lee Harris on drums, and Paul Webb on bass. Initially achieving chart success with synth-pop hits, the band gradually evolved into a more experimental sound, blending jazz, ambient textures, and free improvisation. Their later work laid the groundwork for what would become known as post-rock.
Early hits such as “Talk Talk” (1982), “It’s My Life” (1984), and “Such a Shame” (1984) established Talk Talk on the UK and international charts. However, the band soon shifted focus from commercial success to artistic exploration. Albums like Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are celebrated for their spacious arrangements, intricate production, and emotional depth — influencing a generation of post-rock and experimental musicians.
Mark Hollis’ thoughtful songwriting, Lee Harris’ subtle and expressive drumming, and Paul Webb’s melodic basslines created a distinctive, immersive sound. The band’s later work emphasised atmosphere, patience, and nuance, challenging conventional pop and rock structures.
