Audioslave – Alternative Rock, Hard Rock and 2000s Rock Icons

Audioslave were an American rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles in 2001, bringing together Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell with Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk. Combining Cornell's powerful vocals with Morello's inventive guitar work and the driving rhythm section of Commerford and Wilk, Audioslave created a powerful blend of alternative rock, hard rock and alternative metal.

The band became one of the defining rock acts of the early 2000s, producing songs including “Cochise”, “Like a Stone”, “Show Me How to Live”, “Be Yourself” and “I Am the Highway”. Across three studio albums, Audioslave developed a sound that combined heavy riffs, melodic songwriting and expansive rock arrangements while drawing on the individual strengths of its members.

From Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden to Audioslave

After Zack de la Rocha's departure from Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk began looking for a new vocalist. Several singers joined the musicians for rehearsals, including B-Real of Cypress Hill, but the group wanted someone who would take the music in a different direction rather than simply replacing de la Rocha. Producer Rick Rubin suggested Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, which had split in 1997, and the musicians began working together.

The newly formed group was initially confirmed for Ozzfest in March 2002, but Cornell left shortly afterwards following disputes between the band's management teams. Around six weeks later, the musicians reunited, dismissed their former management and appointed The Firm to represent them. Epic Records and Interscope Records subsequently agreed to alternate releasing the band's albums. After resolving a name dispute with a Liverpool-based band using the same name, the group officially adopted Audioslave and launched their website in September 2002. Their first single, “Cochise”, introduced the new lineup and helped build anticipation for their self-titled debut.

Audioslave was released later in 2002 and became a major commercial success, reaching number seven on the Billboard 200 and eventually achieving triple-platinum status in the United States. Extensive touring established the band as a major live act, while songs such as “Like a Stone” and “Show Me How to Live” became enduring favourites. The band followed with Out of Exile in 2005, which debuted at number one in the United States, before making history that same year with a free concert in Havana, Cuba, becoming the first American rock group to perform there.
