Tank are an English heavy metal band formed in London in 1980. They are widely regarded as one of the key bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), known for their raw energy, punk-influenced aggression, and straightforward, hard-hitting metal sound.
Originally led by bassist/vocalist Algy Ward, Tank carved out a distinctive place in the NWOBHM movement with a grittier, more aggressive approach than many of their contemporaries.
Tank’s sound is defined by driving bass lines, stripped-down guitar attack, and a raw, unpolished production style. Their music blends traditional heavy metal with punk attitude and speed-driven aggression.
This rough-edged approach helped set them apart from more polished NWOBHM bands, giving them a cult following.
Filth Hounds of Hades (1982) – debut album produced by Motörhead’s Fast Eddie Clarke, capturing their raw and aggressive signature sound.
Power of the Hunter (1982) – follow-up release expanding their early NWOBHM style.
This Means War (1983) – darker, more intense album reflecting internal changes and heavier songwriting.
War Nation (2012) – comeback-era album continuing their aggressive, old-school metal approach.
Valley of Tears (2015) – later release showcasing a modern take on their classic sound.
Tank are considered one of the most uncompromising bands of the NWOBHM era, influencing both speed metal and later extreme metal with their raw, energetic style.
Fans of artists such as Motörhead, Raven, and Venom are likely to appreciate Tank’s aggressive, stripped-down heavy metal sound.
