Geezer Butler is an English bassist and songwriter best known as a founding member of Black Sabbath, formed in Birmingham in 1968. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in heavy metal history, helping define the genre’s lyrical themes and foundational bass-driven sound.
Alongside Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, and Bill Ward, Geezer Butler helped create the blueprint for heavy metal through Sabbath’s early, groundbreaking recordings.
Geezer Butler’s style is defined by melodic yet heavy bass lines, innovative use of distortion, and lyrical themes exploring occultism, war, politics, and existential dread. He was one of the first rock lyricists to consistently explore darker subject matter that became central to heavy metal.
His bass playing often functions as both rhythmic foundation and melodic counterpoint to Tony Iommi’s guitar riffs.
