Midnight Oil are an iconic Australian rock band renowned for their politically charged lyrics, high-energy performances, and enduring influence on global rock music. Formed in Sydney in 1972 as Farm, the original lineup included Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie, and bassist Andrew James. They were joined by Peter Garrett in 1973, changed their name to Midnight Oil in 1976, and welcomed Martin Rotsey on guitar in 1977. Over the years, Peter Gifford (1980–1987) and later Bones Hillman (until 2020) filled the role of bass player, helping define the band’s signature sound. As of 2022, Midnight Oil has sold over 20 million albums worldwide.
Midnight Oil’s music blends rock, alternative, and post-punk influences with socially and politically conscious lyrics, addressing issues like environmentalism, Indigenous rights, and social justice.
