Cirith Ungol are an American Heavy Metal band widely regarded as one of the defining forces behind epic Doom Metal. Formed in California in 1971, their sound blends traditional heavy metal with doom-laden weight and a strong sense of dark fantasy. Known for their raw production, distinctive vocals, and literary influences, Cirith Ungol created a style that feels both unpolished and enduring.
Their music leans heavily into atmosphere and narrative, drawing on themes of sword-and-sorcery, myth, and bleak fantasy landscapes. Rather than chasing refinement, the band’s appeal lies in its rough edges — a sound that feels direct, stubborn, and entirely its own.
Emerging long before “epic doom” became a recognised genre, Cirith Ungol developed their identity through a combination of heavy riffs, unconventional song structures, and a strong connection to fantasy literature. Their name is taken from The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, referring to the “Pass of the Spider” — a dark route into Mordor associated with the creature Shelob. The band typically pronounce it see'reeth oo'ngol, rather than the more formal kee'reeth oo'ngol.
Across their early releases, the band balanced traditional Heavy Metal energy with slower, weightier passages, helping to shape a sound that would later influence the wider Doom Metal scene. Their approach was never overly polished, but that lack of refinement became a defining strength.
The current incarnation reflects both legacy and continuation:
Armand Anthony joined on guitars in 2023 and performs with the band in a live capacity.
Following the release of Paradise Lost, Cirith Ungol disbanded, with members largely stepping away from music. Greg Lindstrom later recorded two albums with Falcon, while others remained inactive for many years.
The band’s return came in 2015 when Jarvis Leatherby organised rehearsals with Robert Garven and Jim Barraza. Tim Baker attended initially without performing vocals, before growing demand and festival interest — including Keep It True and Up the Hammers Festival — led to a full reunion. Their first comeback show took place at Frost and Fire II in Ventura, at the same venue as their final pre-split performance.
In 2016, the band received official recognition from the Mayor of San Buenaventura for their reunion and contribution to heavy music.
Each album reflects a different stage in their evolution, from early heavy metal foundations to a more defined epic doom sound.
