The 1975 are an English alternative rock band formed in Wilmslow, Cheshire in 2002 by vocalist and guitarist Matty Healy, guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald and drummer George Daniel while attending secondary school together. Before adopting the name The 1975, the band performed under several different names. The band's name was inspired by a page of handwritten notes found in a copy of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, dated "1st June, The 1975". Frontman Matty Healy was struck by the phrasing and later chose it as the band's name.
