Nihilist were a Swedish death metal band from Stockholm, formed in 1987. Although short-lived, Nihilist are considered one of the most important foundational acts in the development of the Stockholm death metal scene, directly influencing the formation of Entombed and the broader Swedish death metal movement.
Emerging during the earliest wave of extreme metal in Sweden, Nihilist helped establish the raw, HM-2-driven sound that would become a defining characteristic of early Swedish death metal.
Nihilist’s sound is defined by raw, heavily distorted guitar tones, primitive but aggressive riffing, and a strong influence from early thrash and UK death metal.
Their music helped shape the template for what would become the classic Stockholm sound, characterised by buzzsaw HM-2 guitar distortion and crushing mid-tempo heaviness.
Premature Autopsy (1988) – early demo showcasing raw, primitive death metal influenced by thrash and early extreme metal underground sounds.
Only Shreds Remain (1989) – defining early recording that helped establish the Stockholm death metal blueprint with heavy riffing and gritty production.
Drowned (1989) – final demo release before splitting, featuring more structured songwriting and a clearer transition toward the Entombed-era sound.
Nihilist 1987-1989 (2005) – posthumous compilation collecting key Nihilist recordings and preserving their legacy as a foundational Swedish death metal band.
Nihilist are widely regarded as one of the direct precursors to the Swedish death metal explosion of the early 1990s. After their split, several members went on to form Entombed, helping fully define the genre’s most iconic sound.
Fans of bands such as Dismember, Grave and Unleashed are likely to appreciate Nihilist’s raw, formative role in early Swedish death metal.
