Abrasive Wheels are an English street punk band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, formed in 1976. Emerging from the early UK punk movement, they became central to the UK82 scene alongside groups such as The Exploited and G.B.H. Their music combined the raw energy of classic punk with the speed and aggression of hardcore, earning them a lasting reputation for their uncompromising attitude, energetic performances, and DIY spirit. Active between 1976–1984 before reforming in 2003, the band continue to perform and remain an influential name within British punk.
Abrasive Wheels were founded by vocalist Phil "Shonna" Rzonca and guitarist Dave Ryan, originally alongside bassist Robert Welch and drummer Adam Rzonca. The band's name came from warning signs reading "Danger! Abrasive Wheels!" that Shonna regularly saw during his engineering apprenticeship. After several early lineup changes, the classic lineup of Shonna, Dave Ryan, Harry Harrison, and Nev Nevison came together, recording the releases that established the band's reputation.
Following the success of their self-financed debut EP, the band signed to Riot City Records before later moving to Clay Records. Throughout the early 1980s they became one of the best-known acts of the UK82 movement, touring extensively and regularly appearing in the UK Independent Charts. Although the band split in 1984 after an international tour, Shonna revived Abrasive Wheels in 2003 with a new lineup, and the band continue to perform and record today.
