Altaria are a heavy metal band from Jakobstad, Finland, formed in 2000. The band have developed a melodic and powerful style combining traditional heavy metal with elements of power metal and hard rock, establishing themselves within Finland's rich metal scene.
Known for strong melodies, driving guitar work and polished arrangements, Altaria have built a following among fans of European heavy metal. Although the band have experienced several lineup changes throughout their career, founding members Tony Smedjebacka and Marko Pukkila remain part of the current lineup, giving the band a direct connection to its earliest years.
Altaria developed a sound rooted in melodic heavy metal. Their early development was documented through the demo releases Sleeping Visions (2001) and Feed the Fire (2002), which preceded their first full-length album.
The band's debut, Invitation (2003), was followed by Divinity (2004) and The Fallen Empire (2006), further establishing their melodic heavy metal sound. In 2007, the compilation Divine Invitation brought together material from the band's early period, while Unholy (2009) continued their progression with a heavier approach.
After nearly five years of inactivity, Altaria reunited with former bassist Marko Pukkila for what was announced as the band's final concert at Nummirock on 23 June 2016. The band later returned to activity, announcing in December 2019 that the 2006 lineup had reunited and was recording material for a sixth album. They also remastered their second album, Divinity, which was released on 27 March 2020.
In April 2022, Altaria announced that their new album, Wisdom, would be released on 8 July 2022. The album marked the band's return with their renewed lineup and continued the melodic heavy metal style that has remained central to their music.
