Incantation are an American death metal band from Fair Lawn, New Jersey, formed in 1989. Recognised as one of the leaders of the New York–style death metal movement, alongside Immolation, Mortician and Suffocation, Incantation are known for their deeply oppressive atmosphere, cavernous guitar tone, and occult-influenced themes.
Emerging in the early wave of US death metal, Incantation helped define a darker, more suffocating branch of the genre, blending slow, doom-laden passages with bursts of chaotic brutality.
Incantation’s sound is defined by low-tuned guitars, guttural vocals, and a dense, murky production style. Their music often shifts between slow, ritualistic heaviness and sudden eruptions of blast-driven intensity.
Across their career, the band have remained consistent in their approach, refining their signature atmosphere of darkness, distortion, and sonic oppression.
