Babyshambles are an English rock band formed in London in 2003 by Pete Doherty during a period away from The Libertines. Combining British indie rock with punk, garage rock and folk influences, the band became known for their energetic performances, poetic lyrics and raw, unpredictable approach to music.
Led by Doherty, Babyshambles blend rough-edged guitars, melodic choruses and restless rhythms with a distinctly British character. Their music captures the spirit of London's early-2000s indie scene while drawing on older rock influences, balancing infectious melodies with an unpolished, spontaneous feel.
Babyshambles began taking shape in 2003 when Doherty was unable to perform with The Libertines. Working with a changing group of musicians, he established the band as a separate creative outlet. Early members included guitarist Patrick Walden and drummer Gemma Clarke, before subsequent lineup changes brought guitarist Mick Whitnall, bassist Drew McConnell and drummer Adam Ficek into the group.
Their debut album, Down in Albion (2005), was produced by Mick Jones of The Clash and introduced their mix of indie rock, punk attitude and melodic songwriting to a wider audience. Featuring songs such as “Fuck Forever” and “Albion”, the album helped establish Babyshambles as a major name in mid-2000s British indie. Its successor, Shotter's Nation (2007), featured a more focused production, with “Delivery” becoming another of the band's best-known songs.
Following Sequel to the Prequel (2013), the band became less active as members pursued other projects, while Doherty returned to work with The Libertines. Babyshambles reunited on stage in 2024 before embarking on a UK tour in 2025 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Down in Albion. The return brought the band's best-known songs back to the stage and renewed interest in their catalogue. In 2026, the band also released Live at KOKO, documenting their live performances.
