Spiritual Beggars are a Swedish stoner metal band from Halmstad, formed in 1993 by guitarist Michael Amott following his departure from Carcass. Moving away from extreme metal, Amott focused his songwriting on 70s hard rock, heavy blues, and groove-driven riffs.
While many fans know Amott from Arch Enemy, Spiritual Beggars has long stood as a fully realised band in its own right. The current lineup features Michael Amott on guitars, Ludwig Witt on drums, Per Wiberg on keyboards and backing vocals, Sharlee D’Angelo on bass, and Apollo Papathanasio on lead vocals — a group that balances technical skill with classic hard rock feel.
Spiritual Beggars draw inspiration from the golden era of hard rock without sounding like a nostalgia act. Thick, warm guitar tones combine with Hammond-style keys, melodic vocals, and a rhythm section that favours groove over speed. Their arrangements are spacious, their production clear, and their songwriting respectful of classic traditions — all delivered with modern weight and precision.
