Arms and Sleepers are an American electronic project combining ambient, trip-hop, post-rock and experimental electronica into atmospheric, cinematic compositions. Formed in Boston in 2006 by Mirza Ramic and Max Lewis, the project began with a largely instrumental sound built around delicate piano, atmospheric guitars, soft glitches and slow, crunchy breakbeats before expanding into a much broader palette.
Their music has always occupied the space between electronic production and organic instrumentation, drawing inspiration from film, visual art, hip-hop and post-rock. Live performances have also incorporated synchronised visuals, reinforcing the cinematic quality of their music and creating an immersive experience that extends beyond the recordings themselves.
Ramic and Lewis formed Arms and Sleepers after their previous band, the Maine-based post-rock group The List Exists, came to an end in 2006. Their early releases established the project's atmospheric approach, gradually incorporating vocals, sampling and broader electronic textures alongside the piano, guitars and programmed rhythms that shaped their initial sound.
After a period of hiatus beginning in 2012, they returned with renewed creative momentum, expanding their catalogue through collaborations with vocalists and rappers while bringing electronic production and post-rock instrumentation together in increasingly ambitious ways. This period helped broaden the project's audience and develop the more cinematic approach that has characterised much of their later work.
Max Lewis eventually left the project, with Mirza Ramic continuing Arms and Sleepers as its sole member. His later work has explored increasingly personal themes alongside the project's established sound, including former kingdoms (2022), which reflected on Ramic's experience as a Bosnian refugee, and What Tomorrow Brings, a deeply personal album inspired by memories of war, displacement and family.
