Wasted Youth were an early 1980s hardcore punk band from Los Angeles, active from 1979 to 1983 as L.A.’s Wasted Youth. Their first EP was released under that original name. For all subsequent releases, the band shortened the name to simply Wasted Youth. Emerging from a scene that prized speed, aggression, and zero compromise, their sound was raw, confrontational, and unapologetically urgent, reflecting a growing underground movement that rejected polish and restraint.
The original members of Wasted Youth were Chett Lehrer, Jeff Long, Allen Stiritz, and Danny Spira, a lineup that helped define the band’s fast, chaotic sound from the outset. Following in the footsteps of Black Flag and Circle Jerks, Wasted Youth delivered short, high-energy songs that prioritised impact and attitude over technicality. Each track carried a sense of controlled chaos — explosive, brief, and impossible to ignore — perfectly capturing the energy of early American hardcore.
Though their recorded output was limited, Wasted Youth remain a vital reference point for fans of the period. Their music is built to hit hard and move on quickly, leaving little room to catch your breath, and standing as a testament to the intensity and immediacy of the LA hardcore scene.
