The dream pop/shoegaze collective SOM was formed in 2018 and emerged from a tight-knit community of musicians based in Boston, Massachusetts. After eight years of growth and exploration, the band stands at a pivotal moment in their career. With a steadily evolving sound that blends shoegaze, post-metal, and “Doom Pop,” SOM has matured into a force of introspection and adventurous songwriting. Their latest full-length, Let The Light In (2025), showcases them at their most dynamic and emotionally resonant.
About SOM
SOM are known for their dense, ethereal textures, moments of crushing heaviness, and intricate compositions. The current lineup consists of:
Justin Forrest — Drums (formerly Bass)
Mike Repasch-Nieves — Guitar
Will Benoit — Voice, Bass (formerly Guitar)
Joel Munguia Reynolds — Guitar
In 2023, unforeseen circumstances led to founding drummer Duncan Rich leaving the band during the writing of Let The Light In. The group reshaped their roles mid-process, resulting in a refreshed lineup and a richer, more dynamic sound. The album highlights SOM’s shoegaze roots while exploring heavier, bracing moments and quiet, introspective passages. Benoit’s vocals move seamlessly between soaring falsettos and chopped textures, layered over lush guitar soundscapes from Reynolds and Repasch-Nieves.
Since 2019, SOM have toured extensively across North America, Europe, and the UK, performing alongside bands like Katatonia, Solstafir, Slow Crush, Holy Fawn, O’Brother, Defeater, Gost, and Rosetta, gaining invaluable experience that informs their nuanced songwriting and dynamic live performances.
